Keep your policy. Switch your agent.

Keep Your Policy. Switch Your Insurance Agent.

Happy with your insurance company but not the service? Keep the same policy, coverage and premium, and make our Lakeland office your agent. We check your company's rules, prepare the letter, and send it once you've signed.

Quick answer

An agent of record change lets you keep your current insurance policy, with the same insurance company, coverage and premium, and make Magnuson Insurance the agency that services it. You sign a short letter naming us as your agent, and your insurance company makes the change, often at renewal. Upload your declarations page or ID card and we'll check whether your company's rules allow a switch now.

Upload your declarations page or ID card

A PDF or a photo works. For an ID card, add the front and back. Reading it takes up to a minute.

Up to 2 files, 4 MB in all. Don't upload anything showing a Social Security, driver's license or bank account number.

Uploading doesn't sign anything or change your policy, and coverage can't be bound or changed through this website. We use your document only for this request (privacy policy). We'll email or call you about it during office hours.

Rather type it in? Send us your policy details and an agent will take it from there.

How an agent change can help you save

  • We review your policy for credits it may be missing, like wind mitigation credits on a Florida home, and ask your insurance company to apply them. Wind mitigation guide →
  • At renewal, we compare your company's offer against the other companies we represent, so a rate increase doesn't leave you without options.
  • With your home, auto and other policies at one agency, it's easier to compare bundling against separate companies.

Savings depend on your situation and each insurer's filed rates, so a real quote is the only sure number. We won't suggest a lower price that leaves a gap you'd pay for after a loss.

How it works

Four steps from upload to your new agent

  1. Upload your declarations page or ID card

We read the insurance company, policy number and renewal date from it. You check every detail before anything is sent.

  2. We check your company's rules

Each company has its own rules for agent changes. Some accept one any time; others only in the weeks before renewal. We tell you which applies.

  3. You sign the letter

An agent confirms we're appointed with your company, then sends you the agent of record letter to sign. Nothing changes until you sign it.

  4. Your company makes the change

We send the signed letter to your insurance company. Some companies let your current agent know and wait a few days before making the change.

Questions

Switching insurance agents: common questions

Will switching agents change my premium or coverage?

No. An agent of record change only changes which agency services your policy. Your insurance company, coverage, deductibles and premium stay the same. Your company still sets the price at each renewal, and we can compare it against the other companies we represent then.

Do I have to wait until my policy renews?

It depends on your insurance company. Some accept an agent change at any time during the policy term; others accept one only within a window before renewal, such as the last few months before the renewal date. When you upload your declarations page or ID card, we check your company's rule and tell you the earliest date that works.

Do I need to tell my current agent?

You don't have to, but you can. Some insurance companies notify your current agent when they receive the letter and wait a few business days before making the change. If you change your mind before the change is made, tell us and your insurance company.

Can every policy be moved to Magnuson Insurance?

No. We can become your agent only with insurance companies that have appointed us to sell their policies. Policies from companies sold only through their own agents usually can't be moved to an independent agency. If yours can't, an agent can compare quotes for the same coverage from the companies we do represent.

What happens to my claims, payments and auto ID cards?

Claims are still reported to and paid by your insurance company, and you keep paying the company the way you do now unless you change it. Your ID cards stay valid. Once the change is made, we can help with claims, billing questions and policy changes.
