Find your business's NAICS code and the coverage to ask about
Quick answer: A NAICS code is the six-digit federal code for what your business does, such as 238160 for roofing contractors. Search by trade or by code and we'll show the coverages Florida businesses in that line usually ask about. Carriers rate on their own class codes, so treat the result as a starting point for your quote, not a rating or a promise of coverage.

Commercial and Institutional Building Construction
Contractors are rated heavily on trade, subcontracted work and certificates from subs. Florida workers' comp class follows each employee's duties, not the NAICS code. Builders risk and contractor E&O are also common; ask us.

How agents use the code
- It gives the agency and the carrier the same name for your type of business.
- It does not set your price. Carriers rate on their own class codes, your payroll, sales, claims history and, in Florida, the building's roof age and wind features.
- It does not replace a description of your operations. If the two disagree, the description is what counts at claim time.
- Codes come from the Census Bureau's 2022 NAICS Manual. Older paperwork may show a 2017 code that has since been replaced.
Questions Florida business owners ask
What is a NAICS code and why does my insurance agent ask for it?
NAICS is the federal system that sorts businesses by what they do, with a six-digit code for each type. Agents use it to describe your operations consistently to carriers. The carrier still assigns its own rating class from your operations description, payroll and sales.
Is my NAICS code the same as my workers' compensation class code?
No. Florida workers' compensation classes follow what each employee does on the job, so a roofing company's office staff and crews carry different class codes under the same NAICS code.
Which NAICS code should I use if my business does more than one thing?
The Census Bureau's rule is to use the activity that makes up most of your revenue. Tell your agent about every operation, because carriers price each one and a missed side activity can cause a problem at claim time.
