Quick answer
Individual dental insurance helps pay for cleanings, exams and X-rays, usually at little or no cost, and shares the cost of fillings, crowns and root canals after a deductible. Plans set an annual maximum, often have waiting periods for major work, and pay best in-network. We offer Delta Dental plans with instant online quotes and enrollment; an agent can help you compare.

Dental Insurance FAQ
Is there a waiting period on dental insurance?
Often, yes. Many individual plans cover preventive care right away but have waiting periods before basic and major services such as crowns or root canals. Waiting periods vary by plan, so check them against any work you already know you need.
What is an annual maximum?
It's the most the plan pays in a plan year. Once it's reached, you pay the rest of that year's dental costs yourself. Compare the maximum to the cost of any major work you're planning.
Can I keep my dentist?
Plans usually pay the most when you see an in-network dentist. Before you enroll, check whether your dentist is in the plan's network.
What it usually doesn't cover
- Costs above the plan's annual maximum.
- Major work during a waiting period.
- Cosmetic procedures such as whitening, on most plans.
- Orthodontics, unless the plan includes it.
Every policy is different. Your declarations page and policy form decide what's covered.
Have this ready before you ask for a quote
- Ages of everyone to be covered
- Your dentist's name, to check whether they're in the network
- Treatment you expect this year (crowns, implants, braces)
- Any current dental coverage and when it ends
