Hagerty was founded in 1984 in Traverse City, Michigan, by Frank and Louise Hagerty, originally to insure classic and collector wooden boats before writing its first classic car policy in 1991. Now led by McKeel Hagerty and publicly traded on the New York Stock Exchange (HGTY), the company has grown into one of the leading providers of specialty insurance for classic, collector, and enthusiast vehicles. Hagerty's policies are built around agreed-value coverage and terms tailored to how collectors actually drive and store their vehicles, rather than standard daily-use auto policies.
